404. File not Found. Custom Error pages. Want them for your site? Of course you do! A 404 page directs lost visitors back to your main site when they encounter a mistyped link, an old link, or wander astray.

You can have them if you have your own hosting options. There are 2 ways to add then to your site. First, check your with your HOST! Check your with your HOST! Check your with your HOST! Check your with your HOST!

Your host most likely has a nice tutorial or how to do this as well.  Most likely you will see a folder labeled ERROR in the WEB or PUBLIC HTML folder. If that is the case, all you have to do is copy the html pages to your computer, customize them, then re-load them to the same folder, and you have your own personalized 404 pages. IF you get a 550 error when you try to upload, you need to DOUBLE check with your host about resetting the permissions * they have to do it* if you have the error folder do NOT try to add error pages via htaccess....

No such folder? You can create two simple files and you have your custom 404 pages.

First you need to create a page named 404.html then upload it to your server. Then you need to open notepad and enter the following information

Then save the document as .htaccess ~ select save as ALL FILES.  Then upload to your main  web directory. You may need to save as a txt, then edit the extension.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE!! Save a copy of the file as a text file, because once uploaded, the file "disappears" on your server. YOU will not see it! You can do many things with the .htaccess file, and you want to keep track of paste efforts, and not erase them if you update the file.

if you DID NOT check with your host, uploaded the htaccess file and watched your site go *poof*.... and now are about to cry because htaccess file doesn't show in your FTP....  EDIT the saved copy on your computer... and remove all the text... uploading a BLANK file..... and all fixed.. and next time....... check your with your HOST! Check your with your HOST! Check your with your HOST! Check your with your HOST!
